A First Timer's Guide to the Great Wildebeest Migrations

The Great Migration isn't a single event. It's a year round movement of wildebeest and zebra following the rains between the Serengeti and the Maasai Mara. If a river crossing is what you're after, the best window is typically July through October, when the herds cross the Mara and Talek rivers in search of fresh grazing.

Book your camp early. Migration season availability in the Mara fills up months in advance, especially for camps near the main crossing points. A good guide will also know which crossings are active week to week, since the herds move constantly.

Pack layers. Mornings on an open game drive vehicle are cold even in the dry season, plus neutral colored clothing, a good zoom lens or binoculars, and a protective bag for your camera gear.

Beyond the crossings themselves, the Mara delivers Big Five sightings, hot air balloon safaris at sunrise, and Maasai cultural visits, so build in time beyond just migration watching.
