48 Hours in Lamu: Dhows, Donkeys, and Swahili Culture

Lamu Old Town is the oldest continuously inhabited Swahili settlement in East Africa, and one of the few places left where daily life still moves at the pace of a donkey cart. There are almost no cars on the island.

Spend your first day wandering the narrow coral stone alleyways, visiting the Lamu Museum, and watching dhow builders at work along the waterfront. In the evening, take a sunset dhow sail out on the channel.

On day two, cross to Shela village for a quiet beach walk, then head back for a late lunch of fresh seafood and Swahili spiced rice before your return journey.
